BioSketch
My introduction to clinical documentation came in 1987, when I implemented the first speech recognition system for clinical documentation (Kurzweil’s VoiceRAD) in New York City radiology practices. Over the next 12 years at Kurzweil and then Lernout & Hauspie, I played a leading role in establishing the foundation for the principle technologies that transcription companies currently seek: back-end speech recognition and Natural Language Processing.
Later, as VP of Operations for a small transcription company, I learned first-hand that transcriptionists will go work for a competitor if their tools slow them down. This understanding helped me when I became head of Product Management for Dictaphone’s ichart, where I managed relationships with many transcription companies.
Today, as Product Line Marketing Manager for 3M Health Information Systems, I seek to leverage 3M’s experience in coding to enable the transcription industry to expand into clinical documentation improvement. I believe it is possible to provide a viable and vibrant future for transcriptionists and the companies they work for, while improving U.S. competitiveness through better patient care, more appropriate reimbursement and reduced malpractice legal costs.
I have spent most of my 22-year career applying speech recognition and Natural Language Processing to improving the quality and cost-effectiveness of clinical documentation. I would like now to apply my experience for the greater good of the transcription industry to create a rising tide of opportunity that will encourage cooperation among MTIA’s membership.
